Meeting Description: Project #18 “History of the Spanish Language in the Americas” is a research group that meets as part of the XVIII ALFAL International Congress to take place next July in Bogotá, Colombia. This project seeks to advance the description of Spanish since it was transplanted in the Americas as a result of the Spanish conquest started in 1492. It studies how Spanish was transformed in sounds and meanings throughout colonial times to the present day. Cultural and linguistic aspects are studied as well as contact phenomena, textual documentation, linguistic planning, i.e. any historical aspect that has contributed to the formation of Spanish in the Americans in the regional dialects that conform it.
