Meeting Description: Venue: Syracuse University, Syracuse, New York

We are delighted to inform you that the Executive Committee of the International Association for World Englishes has accepted our proposal to host the 23rd International Conference of World Englishes at Syracuse University from June 30-July 2, 2017.

IAWE is committed to the study of the forms and functions of varieties of Englishes in diverse cultural and sociolinguistic contexts. The association focuses on global issues relating to three major aspects of World Englishes: language, literature, and pedagogy.

The conference will deal with the issues arising out of the global spread of English as an international and intranational lingua franca in Asia, Africa, Latin America and Europe. As we know, English plays a central and influential role in many important spheres of activities such as education, administration, law, media, literature, information technology, news, entertainment and social media, research in STEM and security studies, international relations among others. However, English is often used as a second or third language and interacts with many regional languages and cultures resulting in the development of many new varieties or “World Englishes”.

The focus of this conference will be the issues arising out of the tension between the global vs. the local roles of English. While the role of English as a global lingua franca calls for international standards, its equally important role as media for expressing regional identities and cultures brings about tremendous diversity. Thus, English is placed in a paradoxical situation where its very success as a global medium is based on resolving mutually conflicting functions (i.e. resolving global vs. local paradox).

A special attraction of the Syracuse conference will be that it will feature a symposium in memory of the founder and dominant scholar of the field of World Englishes, Professor Braj B. Kachru, who passed away in July this year. Professor Kachru was a pioneering scholar, an influential leader in the fields of linguistics and English, and a charismatic intellectual with a world-wide following.
