Description:

One post-doctoral position is available in the Holliday Lab in the Department of Linguistics at the University of California, Berkeley. This position is linked to a project funded by the Spencer Foundation (‘“Don’t Take That Tone With Me”: Linguistic Variation and Disciplinary Action on African American Children in Schools’) awarded to Drs. Nicole Holliday (Pomona College, Berkeley) and Sabriya Fisher (Wellesley). This project investigates the link between use of prosodic, phonological and morphosyntactic features of African American English (AAE), and experiences of school discipline. The postdoctoral researcher will take a leading role in conducting experimental work, performing data analysis, and managing a team of research assistants in both the Bay Area and Boston.

The position may be hybrid, but the fellow must be within commuting distance of UC Berkeley.

A PhD in Linguistics or a related field is required. Applicants should have training and experience with quantitative variationist sociolinguistic research. Required skills include familiarity with R and modern statistical methods in the social sciences, as well as a scholarly understanding of African American English in Black communities. Applicants should also have experience with analysis of phonetic variables, and knowledge of methods for prosodic analysis is preferred.

The position is available in late Summer/early Fall 2024 (start date flexible) and is for a period of one year. The position is open to US citizens.
Candidates should contact Nicole Holliday via email ([email protected]). Please submit a CV, research statement, two samples of written work and the names and affiliations of three recommenders (who may be contacted later). Review of materials will begin on April 30, 2024 and will continue until the position is filled.

The University of California, Berkeley is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.
