Experiences from the Field

This presentation reports on my experience as a field researcher mapping morphosyntactic categories of Potawatomi, an Algonquian language, to the GOLD ontology through FIELD, an ontology-based lexical database program (see Because the creation of a ‘profile’ for a particular language is similar to the task that working groups 1–4 will be engaged in during the conference, I will provide an example by discussing several points of the Potawatomi mapping that required modification and elaboration of GOLD, and how they have been addressed in the latest version of the ontology and in the GOLD community model. This process reveals both the challenges inherent to building a linguistic ontology, as well as the potential of 'bottom up' ontology building though the efforts of the wider linguistic community.
