Panning for GOLD while Discovering a Grammar

Though we are not newcomers to data annotation and data structures, the DOBES Salar-Monguor team has had difficulties with applying the GOLD ontology to data from our only partially-understood language varieties. As an EMELD SBP data provider, I will present this project's attempts to harmonize morpheme lists of metatags with the GOLD ontology. Specifically I will cover (1) the iterative process of establishing metatags for language varieties whose grammatical structures only reveal themselves gradually during the process of investigation; to discuss (2) the kinds of functionality that GOLD related tools should offer a field linguist of this sort; and (3) the current difficulties in attempting to make use of the GOLD ontology and the FIELD tool.
