Just in case anyone is interested in following up, the special journal
issue focusing on the "Bilingual, Bimodal Courtroom" which was mentioned by
Ellen L. Contini-Morava (in connection with Deaf people's experiences in
the legal system) will be an issue of the _Journal of Interpretation_
and not, as the original message noted, of _Sign Language Studies_.

AUSTRALIAN LANGUAGE MATTERS
Australian Language Matters is a 20 page quarterly containing recent
developments and information on language and literacy issues in Australia.
"Language is defined in the broadest sense of the term and includes
language policy, interpreting and translating, oracy, Auslan, ESL and LOTE.
ALM Contains sections written by a wide range of language organisations
including research centres, professional associations and interest groups.
ALM also contains articles on general language and literacy issues, news
about conferences, book reviews and staff announcements, as well as open
discussions concerning language policy and other topics that directly
affect the language and literacy community.
ALM is coordinated by the National Languages and Literacy Institute of
Australia Limited.

BASQUE LANGUAGE CLASSES
"Euzko-Etxea (Basque House) of New York

Karmelo Barrenetxea has agreed to teach interested members(of the Euskal
Etxea)and friends the Basque language. From October 2nd through December 18th,
two classes -one for those who do not currently speak Basque and the other
for those who have at least a conversational ability in the language -
will be held on alternating Sunday afternoons from 3:00 to 4:30. The fee for
each participant will be $5.00 per session, and each group will meet six times
during this period. The total payment of $30.00 per person will be payable
at the first session.
BEGINNERS CLASSES INTERMEDIATE CLASSES
October 2nd, 16th, 30th October 9th, 23rd
November 13th, 27th November 6th, 20th
December 11th December 4th, 18th
If you are not able to attend one of the classes, a tape will be made which
should enable you to review the materials discussed.
At the end of the course, an evaluation will be made to determine whether
the classes will be an ongoing activity.
Anyone interested in participating must call Karmelo by Wednesday, September
28th at his home after 4.00 P.M. at (201) 271-0619."
